Saint John Moose

...coming soon to Market Slip! We're moving to Saint John, New Brunswick this Fall!

is so outdated! We’re already here, and I haven’t written anything since September, obviously. I was meaning to write a little more or less each day, about this process, but I guess I got just too excited.

The 2nd of November we moved in to our beautiful apartment. Spacious and bright with a grand view of North End. I can walk downtown…it takes only about ten minutes, and there’s a shopping center across the road.

From having lived in a very secluded place, where there was no sign of life at night, it’s almost a delight to wake up at night and see cars moving!

The ocean is all around and that was one of the major reasons for moving. We go out to a beach…if not every day, so almost. There are so many places to discover. We often go out to Lily Lake to look at the ducks…my favourite bird!

I’m sure there were many more places to see and discover in Quebec but I guess in my case the language barrier put a damper on the whole thing.

We got rid of most stuff when we moved, so we travelled light – with two saddle bags LOL. So far we’ve bought a new bed, a couch for me, a desk for my husband. We kept the dining table which is really nice and a few other pieces of furniture.

Three weeks have passed

and we totally love our new life in Saint John.

Each morning I wake up with a feeling of disbelief when I look out the window. Watching the panoramic view of North End, the sunrise...our white and fresh apartment...all of it -- it's such a difference to where we used to live.

There's still a lot to do here at home but there's no rush, and we've been out a great deal. I've been walking downtown, I can talk to people and read the newspaper so to me, in particular, it's a new life.

I've always loved ducks, for one reason or another, so we've been out to Rockwood Park many times already and I've been taking lots of photos of the mallards in Lily Lake.

On November 11th I was in Harbour Station for the Remembrance Day ceremonies. It's was beautiful. I was so glad I went! In our old place you couldn't even find a poppy to buy... Harbour Station was filled almost to the last seat and that warmed my heart.

It's all settled

We're moving in to Fort Howe on November 1. It was the first apartment we looked at. Fell in love with it immediately but went on to look at others that we had listed beforehand, from the web.

I had my hopes up for a place on Hickey Road but this is just one more evidence of how you can be fooled by a picture. The whole place looked completely different in real life. I'm sure the apartments are alright...it was just that I couldn't see myself there.

Hickey Road just wasn't for us. We drove out there and looked and after that we went back and signed up for Fort Howe.

Just came back to Quebec after four wonderful days in Saint John. Yesterday was rainy and windy. We drove out to Saints' Rest just to enjoy the angry sea. Now things really will start moving...now that we know where we're going!

Getting closer...

The house is sold. In November we'll be moving to Saint John. It's all settled. I'm excited... elated!

On Tuesday we're going there looking for a place to live. We'll be renting an apartment. Have looked at oodles of places online but one has to see them for real. I'm partial to an apartment complex on Hickey Road...don't really know why...I just feel good about it. Would love it if we could find something there.  Park Place Apartments, the area is called.

The Ships of Saint John

During our last visit in Saint John we stayed in the Fort Howe hotel. Had a room with a harbor view and I loved to watch the ships coming and going... something I miss from my little town back home. One day they had three, huge cruise ships at the same time and it was almost a majestic sight... seeing them appearing -- almost sort of materializing -- through the morning fog. This reminded my husband of this poem...

The Ships of Saint John by Bliss Carman
Where are the ships I used to know,
That came to port on the Fundy tide
Half a century ago,
In beauty and stately pride?
In they would come past the beacon light,
With the sun on gleaming sail and spar,
Folding their wings like birds in flight
From countries strange and far.
Schooner and brig and barkentine,
I watched them slow as the sails were furled,
And wondered what cities they must have seen
On the other side of the world.

Frenchman and Britisher and Dane,
Yankee, Spaniard and Portugee,
And many a home ship back again
With her stories of the sea.

Calm and victorious, at rest
From the relentless, rough sea-play,
The wild duck on the river's breast
Was not more sure than they.

The creatures of a passing race,
The dark spruce forests made them strong,
The sea's lore gave them magic grace,
The great winds taught them song.

And God endowed them each with life--
His blessing on the craftsman's skill--
To meet the blind unreasoned strife
And dare the risk of ill.

Not mere insensate wood and paint
Obedient to the helm's command,
But often restive as a saint
Beneath the Heavenly hand.

All the beauty and mystery
Of life were there, adventure bold,
Youth, and the glamour of the sea
And all its sorrows old.

And many a time I saw them go
Out on the flood at morning brave,
As the little tugs had them in tow,
And the sunlight danced on the wave.

There all day long you could hear the sound
Of the caulking iron, the ship's bronze bell,
And the clank of the capstan going round
As the great tides rose and fell.

The sailors' songs, the Captain's shout,
The boatswain's whistle piping shrill,
And the roar as the anchor chain runs out,--
I often hear them still.

I can see them still, the sun on their gear,
The shining streak as the hulls careen,
And the flag at the peak unfurling,--clear
As a picture on a screen.

The fog still hangs on the long tide-rips,
The gulls go wavering to and fro,
But where are all the beautiful ships
I knew so long ago?

Buck, Duck and Moose

We're Buck, Duck and Moose... me being Duck, my husband Buck and our cat Moose. That's not entirely true of course...his real name is McDuff but sometimes we lovingly call him Moose.

Just a few weeks ago ago we made a final decision to move to Saint John, New Brunswick. This is big...especially for my husband... because he's lived in Quebec for more than forty years but is originally from Saint John.

I, on the other hand, am originally from Sweden but have lived in Quebec for almost five years now. I don't speak French.

First time we visited Saint John I totally fell in love with the place! Everything...the ocean, the fog, the people...the lifestyle.
